CAN I EXPECT MY FLOOR COLOR TO HAVE VARIATIONS?

Yes. Hardwood flooring is made from wood timber and is an environmental product, so you should anticipate to find natural color variations in the wood. Although lower grades of flooring tend to have more character marks, color differences are visible in all grades of wood. Exotic floors will have much more color difference than is found in domestic species.

WHAT DOES “RANDOM WIDTHS” MEAN?

When a product is said to have random widths it means the hardwood planks come in a variety of widths, instead of one standard width. When you purchase a floor like this you will receive boards of all the various widths (you cannot pick and choose which widths you receive). This is a popular choice for those that like the rustic or old-world style.

WHAT DOES “RANDOM LENGTHS” MEAN?

If a product is said to have random lengths it means the lengths of the hardwood planks vary. This provides a more natural, un-patterned look to the floor when it is installed. Many times random lengths are represented by indicating the range of lengths. For example, “1-7 ft” would mean some of the planks will be 1 ft in length, some will be 7 ft in length, or any length in between.

WHAT SHOULD I USE TO CLEAN MY FLOOR?

Use a brand name hardwood cleaner, preferably one that is made by a hardwood flooring manufacturer. Using this type of floor cleaner ensures that the manufacturer has done their research and knows what solution is best for hardwood. We recommend the Impressions Hardwood Floor Cleaning Kit. Do not use oil soaps, waxes, furniture polish, vinegar, ammonia based products, steam mops, or your vacuum cleaner with the beater bar turning. Click here to read the Do’s and Dont’s for Maintaining Hardwood Floors.

CAN I USE A STEAM CLEANER ON MY HARDWOOD FLOORING?

Never use a steam cleaner on a hardwood floor. A steam mop pushes water down onto the floor which can cause the finish to bubble up as the water gets under the finish. It will damage the product and could void your warranty.

I HAVE USED AN OIL BASE CLEANER. HOW DO I GET BACK MY FLOOR’S ORIGINAL SHINE?

Contact the manufacturer of the cleaner to find out how it can be safely removed.

I HAVE GLUE LEFT ON MY FLOOR FROM THE INSTALLATION. HOW DO I REMOVE IT?

Because there is a wide variety of installation glues available, we recommend that you contact the specific glue manufacturer involved to find out the safest way for removing the product from your floor.

HOW DOES MOISTURE AFFECT MY HARDWOOD FLOORING?

Excessive moisture can lead to numerous changes to your floor, such as cupping, buckling or cracking. Click here to read “Wood Floor Cupping: Why Does It Happens and What Can You Do?”

WHAT CAN I DO TO PROTECT MY FLOORS?

It is important for you to protect your floors by using Felt Pads on all furniture items. We also recommend keeping welcome mats or rugs near entry ways to remove dirt from shoes that can scratch and damage your floors over time.

CAN YOU INSTALL IMPRESSIONS HARDWOOD OVER RADIANT HEAT?

Yes! Berkshire, Esteem, Tradition and Blue Ridge* can be installed over radiant heat. Experts agree, the best option for radiant heat is engineered hardwood. It is not as thick as solid hardwood, leaving plenty of room for the thin heating cables or tubes to lie easily beneath the floors. Engineered hardwood can also be “floated” which means the boards are glued at the seams and not nailed or glued down to the subfloor. Also, make sure your radiant heating system has been fully operational at 80 degrees for 2 weeks prior to installation. Read more about installing hardwood floors over radiant heat here, where we go into more detail.

*Except Brazilian Cherry and Maple Natural.

ARE IMPRESSIONS PRODUCTS CARB II COMPLIANT?

All of our products are CARB (California Air Resource’s Board) II compliant. The CARB II compliant standard is one of the most stringent standards in effect to limit formaldehyde emissions. We require all of our manufacturers to adhere to all environmental, health, and safety requirements, including stringent standards on formaldehyde emissions.
